The Inside Scoop

Since I’ve been asked for the INSIDE SCOOP here it is.

Purchasing is not as easy as it sounds.  Selling can be harder because no matter what you have it’s always worth so much alpine1less than you think it should be especially if you’re considering trading it in.  Theirs is in demand and yours isn’t.  Now if you turn right back around and try to buy yours, the story would be a little different.

Our motorhome only had 50,000 miles on it but it was a 2005!  We had thought 2017 would be the year of major updating.  However, by the time spring rolled and we visited a few RV shows, we knew we wouldn’t be doing any updating.  We’d be replacing and we weren’t sure we wanted one with another motor to worry about.

The RV sales people you see are amazing especially when it comes to how many different RVs they want to convince you to buy.  It doesn’t really matter what you tell them you’re looking for.  They always have a better idea for you.  Well, that part didn’t go well.

Just like everyone else does it, we started picking up brochures and just looking at floor plans.  We had a few “musts” and a few “doesn’t matters” .  This is the floor plan we found we wanted.  That bed had to slide out to give us the large end closet.  That was a must.  The other musts were it had to be under 35’ to fit in some of those tight places and a refrigerator that could run on propane was necessary.

After looking at dozens of floorplans we thought we knew what we wanted until the salesperson tried to up-sell us.  He actually talked us out of a purchase because we did decide to go UP.  Go figure!  Then, we discovered the Keystone Alpine.  However, the one we wanted was a little difficult to find and prices in locations varied a lot.

Thus, that led us to Arizona.  With the truck in Washington and the RV purchased in Arizona, we needed t0 have the 5th wheel delivered.  It was.

Then, it went right back for a few issues and that was stressful.  It’s interesting how attentive salespeople are when you haven’t bought yet and how inattentive once you have.  Hopefully, the issues are now fixed since it’s been delivered for the second time.

We ended up with a king bed but we’re thinking we’ll be cutting it down to a queen.

That’s it.  Now you know the inside scoop.  We haven’t figured out the detail on our little gadabout trailer.  We certainly aren’t going to haul two.  That’s still in the “thinking” stage because we really like it.

The solar eclipse is just around the corner.  Since we're in an area to experience 98% of the eclipse, we all have our solar glasses including Buck.  Do you?

‘Tis life on the road.

  1. Camping World service is the pits. Don't cut down the king bed til you try it out. We thought we were going to cut ours down but now we really like the king.

  2. We were done with our dealer as soon as they failed so badly on our pick-up day. Since then we've gone to Camping World around the country and been much happier. The 5er is sweet - and soooo big!! Enjoy :-))))

  3. "We ended up with a king bed but we’re thinking we’ll be cutting it down to a queen." We did that in our Winnebago 34Y. While we love sleeping on a king we simply needed more aisle space at the sides of the bed. We actually had the dealer do it though so they provided the queen-sized mattress in exchange for the king mattress.

  4. That floor plan is so similar to ours. We have a queen-size bed and find it plenty big. Your TV is located on a different. Looks like a beautiful "home." Did you get the washer/dryer? We don't have one. I use that as my closet. Paul put some shelves in there. I put my laundry basket in there too. Good luck with your decision.

  5. Beautiful. Congratulations. Your thoughts about salesmen are so true. We still had issues but we fixed them. Still haven't found the promised inventer though.

  6. We got rid of the King bed. Much more room on the sides and easier to make. The only thing Bill wanted was a TV straight across from where he sits. I couldn't tell you how many salespeople wouldn't listen to that request. We looked at this floor plan at a couple of dealers, the couch could be switched to the end and the recliners placed directly across from the TV. Only one salesperson knew that.

  7. Nice looking trailer, hope things all work out for you, a propane fridge would be a much for us as well. Hope you get things all worked out.

  8. Hoping everything works out with your new 5er. Are you planning on towing it around and if so you will need to upgrade the truck. Everyone needs to personalize their RVs to make it work for themselves.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

    2. Lovely home and as usual in Mo's 5rs so much room. Sunce we aren't full time, and are two women alone we have always appreciated the safety of being able to drive off quickly without having to go outside, especially when boondocking.

  9. I love it, just beautiful! And happy you waited to get exactly what you want. I've heard so many horror stories about pick-up day on new rigs, and so many things don't work. Then they say the manufacturer is responsible, the manufacturer says bring it to the dealer. Frustrating! But a rig like yours will be heaven to live in and worth any preliminary issues, I think. Have fun! Enjoy the eclipse. :)
