The Central California Coast

There are just some places we like to return to.  There are other places we try to avoid. 

Monterey is one we like to return to.

Morgan Hill Thousand Trails Park is one we will avoid.  We won’t be back.  We pulled out of our “upgraded” site after two nights instead of the three we had planned for.  Since our site was an “upgraded” site, the fee was an additional $5 per night.  We had to pay that on our departure.  While waiting at the Range station, I again noticed all the disrepair in even that little building – dirty, holes in walls, peeling paint and the list went on.  The Ranger finally showed up to collect my money.  What happened to the nice little uniforms they used to wear?  I’m thinking TTN doesn’t want to furnish those either.  They’re out upgrading  the parks to 50 amp service so they can collect the extra $5 a night but they forget to make needed repairs or replace items that are worn out.   

Wednesday was another short day.  We only had a little over 50 miles to go.  This trip south has been so different than other trips when we’ve rushed to get as far south as we can in as short a time as possible. 

We could tell we were passing through Gilroy.  It’s  the Garlic Capital and right down the road we were in Castroville, the Artichoke Capital.  The smell of garlic was definitely in the air but not that of artichokes. 

A total of 51 miles from our starting point we were in Monterey.  Monterey is a beautiful little town that sits right on Monterey Bay.  It’s one of those places we always love returning to.  Besides that the weather this time of year isn’t too hot and it isn’t too cold. 

It took a while to find a satellite signal in our new site. There aren’t an awful lot of trees here but they here.  We figured they must have been strategically placed to make finding those satellites difficult.  

Our first site didn’t work but our second one did.  So, it took a little over an hour to arrive but about 3 hours to get set up.  Oh well …. what else would we have done?  

A little different than the views at our last park.

Our little RV park is on a golf course and it was pretty packed with people.  I’m sure we’ll be out there in the next day or so and make fools out of ourselves but that’s okay too.

With that behind us we were off for a short jaunt through the busy little town.  It was just to whet our appetite and make us want to come back.  There are a few things we definitely want to do.  One is visit the Sardine Restaurant. Neither of us eat sardines but I really want to visit this place.  I’ve never seen sardines on any restaurant menu so it should be interesting.  I hope they offer "regular" food too.

Monterey is home to the Naval Post Graduate School.  That’s another must-stop for us.  This is where they teach some of their classes in Cryptology.

We took a picture of this T-shirt last year.  If they still have them, we want to pick up one for Sandi.  That’s the field she has signed up for in the Navy DEP program.  We’re also going to pick up a little two-star flag.  Some of you know the significance of that.
