The Central California Coast

There are just some places we like to return to.  There are other places we try to avoid.

Monerey1_4Monterey is one we like to return to.

Morgan Hill Thousand Trails Park is one we will avoid.  We won’t be back.  We pulled out of our “upgraded” site after two nights instead of the three we had planned for.  Since our site was an “upgraded” site, the fee was an additional $5 per night.  We had to pay that on our departure.  While waiting at the Range station, I again noticed all the disrepair in even that little building – dirty, holes in walls, peeling paint and the list went on.  The Ranger finally showed up to collect my money.  What happened to the nice little uniforms they used to wear?  I’m thinking TTN doesn’t want to furnish those either.  They’re out upgrading  the parks to 50 amp service so they can collect the extra $5 a night but they forget to make needed repairs or replace items that are worn out.   1_cruz_13_thumb7

Wednesday was another short day.  We only had a little over 50 miles to go.  This trip south has been so different than other trips when we’ve rushed to get as far south as we can in as short a time as possible.

We could tell we were passing through Gilroy.  It’s  the Garlic Capital and right down the road we were in Castroville, the Artichoke Capital.  The smell of garlic was definitely in the air but not that of artichokes.

A total of 51 miles from our starting point we were in Monterey.  Monterey is a beautiful little town that sits right on Monterey Bay.  It’s one of those places we always love returning to.  Besides that the weather this time of year isn’t too hot and it isn’t too cold.

It took a while to find a satellite signal in our new site. There aren’t an awful lot of trees here but they here.  We figured they must have been strategically placed to make finding those satellites difficult.

Our first site didn’t work but our second one did.  So, it took a little over an hour to arrive but about 3 hours to get set up.  Oh well …. what else would we have done?

A little different than the views at our last park.

Our little RV park is on a golf course and it was pretty packed with people.  I’m sure we’ll be out there in the next day or so and make fools out of ourselves but that’s okay too.

With that behind us we were off for a short jaunt through the busy little town.  It was just to whet our appetite and make us want to come back.  There are a few things we definitely want to do.  One is visit the Sardine Restaurant. Neither of us eat sardines but I really want to visit this place.  I’ve never seen sardines on any restaurant menu so it should be interesting.  I hope they offer "regular" food too.

Monterey is home to the Naval Post Graduate School.  That’s another must-stop for us.  This is where they teach some of their classes in Cryptology.

We took a picture of this T-shirt last year.  If they still have them, we want to pick up one for Sandi.  That’s the field she has signed up for in the Navy DEP program.  We’re also going to pick up a little two-star flag.  Some of you know the significance of that.

PS --- Guess who this is for …..

‘Tis life on the road.

  1. Egads! I just checked the menu for the Sardine Restaurant. It may be Monterey's not-to-be-missed restaurant but I'll tell you one thing. We won't be eating there!! Food from that restaurant was served at President Reagan's Inaugral Ball if that tells you anything and Terry wouldn't like it anyway.

  2. Didn't know that little old sardines could make you so scared. They taste just like chicken (liar-liar-pants-on-fire!). ;c)

Hope they do have that shirt, Sandi would certainly love it. She's following in Justin's footsteps?

I don't need a golf course to make a fool out of myself, but please, don't tell anyone!

    1. We saw it at the NEX last year and took the picture for Justin. We looked for it this year and no such luck.

  3. Aren't online menus great? Even better than the post out front to save you from walking in if it's not your thing. I always love the smell of Gilroy :-) - can't always say that about city smells! Your new spot looks like a definite improvement - and great that you have a few days in such a fun (albeit expensive) locale.

I've never explored the California Coast as it is far too expensive for my little budget - but it sure looks gorgeous !!

  5. OMG - I love that area. My parents lived in Gilroy for years, and I never drove through Castroville without stopping for artichokes - my favorite food. I was married in Carmel, and we had our reception in Monterey - I have so many memories of that area. Maybe someday I'll be there again, I hope so, but like you said: very expensive area. You could still visit the most expensive restaurants and only have a drink. That way you could see the inside. We used to walk up and down the main street of Carmel in the evenings and stop for an Irish Coffee to soak up the ambiance, then move on. Especially great in the rain and/or fog. :)

  6. Awesome header photo.

Monterey Bay is one place we have never been and probably won't get to in this lifetime.

A t-shirt will be a super gift for Sandi.

  7. What a wonderful drive down the coast just taking your time.
The Sardine Factory is a little too pricey for our tastes.

    1. Way too pricey for us for that type of restaurant. Now if it was back at the Culinary Institute by Napa, we might have to think twice.

  12. The Monterey area is one of our all-time favourite places to visit. There is so much to see. Thanks for the great photos, it sure brought back some great memories of the exact same locations we have visited.

  14. We only went to Monterey once and we were not RVing. It was a fun place to visit but what really stands out in my mind about Monterey is the Bay Aquarium. I was beautiful!
