Isn’t that a great title ? Actually, it’s true. People in the South and in the east know that most lakes and rivers have snakes. Some even have alligators. We refused to kayak with the alligators even though we were told they wouldn’t bother you. However, I really didn’t want to prove them wrong so we never went.
I had to talk to a good number of people before we decided to kayak in a lake with water moccasins. As it was I never saw a one but Justin did. I just kept looking for them.
Terry in his new kayak.
We had new inflatable kayaks and had been anxious to try them out since we’d only had them in a pool. Our hard sided kayaks were left in Washington and we wanted to compare the two. We expected the inflatables to be a little harder to handle and not have much control. Were we ever pleasantly surprised. They were fabulous and easy to move on top of that water. Remember … Advanced Elements Advanced Frame deserve a 5 star rating!
Justin decided it was his turn to try out “Papa’s” Kayak and watch the turtles.
Now he wants to buy one!
The downside of our adventure kayaking was that the kayak we rented for Justin was made for rapids. All of us can vouch for the fact that those made for rapids don’t do well at all in a calm lake or river. We kept swapping out and trying the different kayaks we had.
I didn’t see a snake. There were no alligators but along with the turtles and geese, there were also lots of water lilies.
Turtles were all over the shoreline.
We had an absolute blast kayaking but that wasn’t all we did that weekend. We went bowling … again and we also went to see the movie, Avatar. We’ve discovered the more we go bowling, the better the scores. Who would have thought? Even Justin enjoyed that too. I think he enjoyed the movie more than I did though.
The weekend was ended by visiting a Navy buddy of Justin’s. He needed help putting a shed up. The whole weekend was fabulous. What great friends he has. What fun we’re having. We almost don’t want to leave here. Why can’t summer be longer? “
I really dislike the camera on my Samsung Note 3. I think it's awful. However, my little handheld Sony I take along on outings such as this, died. Time to get a small one again, I guess.
‘Tis life on the road.
‘
Interesting that your inflatable kayak handles so well, my Sea Eagle is all over the place and I make my own water snake wake as I "slither" from stroke to stroke.
ReplyDeleteNice to see the Navy camaraderie, we had great times and have great memories from living on CG bases and everyone pitching in to help each other. We miss that!
We really checked out the inflatables before we bought the first one. There was lots of research before the purchase. .
DeleteGlad your new kayaks work so well.
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, military community memories. I miss that community sometimes.
Everyone helps each other for sure. It's a good place to be because everyone chips in when needed.
DeleteThat water looks so smooth and inviting. Glad you didn't meet up with any of those critters.
ReplyDeleteSo glad for y'all! You had such a wonderful time enjoying Justin. Memories to last forever!
We're glad we didn't meet any critters either!
DeleteJust the thought of the snakes would have me doubting the sanity of anyone who goes anywhere near them. Glad you didn't see them. Oh what fun to be creating those wonderful memories with Justin.
ReplyDeleteWe have been having fun. This area suits us to a "T" too.
DeleteI see so many kayaking with alligators that the snakes sound more ominous. Something about swimming snakes - ewwwww! So glad you had a great time with all your fun activities. Was it a dollar matinee for Avatar, it's been out on DVD for years :-)
ReplyDeleteThen, maybe I had the name of it wrong. It was a new released movie with all those save the world people. It was released this last week ... whatever it was!
DeleteWhat a great time you are having, enjoying every minute of it.
ReplyDeleteWe are!
DeleteI feel I can take just a little credit for your choice of kayak. Jason loves his and he has two.
ReplyDeleteI think I would be overboard if a water moccasin approached.
No! You don't want to jump overboard that. There are more water snakes in that water.
DeleteI did some canoeing in a Texas bayou ( a long time ago) and ended up with a couple of water moccasins in the canoe with me. When I returned the rental canoe, I had to pay some damages for the dents I made with the paddle while beating the snakes:) Never again!
ReplyDeleteWOW! I would have been a mess if one had decided to hitch a ride with me!
DeleteKayaking with those inflatables when gators are around seems some risky. I tried to picture gator teeth digging into rubber sides. Yikes. Snakes might be OK as long as you don't capsize with the boat.
