Where did I leave off …. I think it was when we crossed over from Mississippi into Alabama. That’s where the nice 4 lane highway turned into a 2 lane highway. Anyway, we zigged and zagged and ran into a lot of traffic as we got closer to Foley, Alabama. The roads were packed with all the locals. It was Strawberry Festival time! Eventually we made it on to the Foley’s Elk Lodge but it was pretty slow going for a while.
Once we were set up we went back to find the Coleman Outlet we had visited several years ago. We remembered the bargains. Terry found a bargain right to begin with. Normally the inflatable PFDs are a little spendy but that wasn’t the case at this Coleman store. Matter of fact, Terry had to have it (of course, he did).
We didn’t get a chance to do a lot in Foley. The rain and the thunderstorms were all around. However, we did take a drive to Gulf Shores. When the sun is shining and the sky is blue, that place is beautiful. I can’t say the same about it when we stopped this time. This picture makes the sky look blue. It wasn’t. It was a very ugly gray. It was raining and it was raining huge buckets of water but a few people were still on the beach.
That night the weather really got nasty. The thunderstorms rolled in and hung around most of the night. There was over 7 inches of rain in one 24 hour period and that was a record even for Foley. Sometimes it’s not fun to be in a place when new records are being set. Those inches of rain created many new rivers around town Needless to say, we didn’t do too much other than stay inside and listen to the rain on the roof.
We figured it was time to get “outta Dodge” so we started getting serious about following the weather forecast. We figured if the report was right on for a change that we could leave early Monday morning and be ahead of the storm all the way to Tallahassee. So, we ran from the storms and we beat them!! The drive was nice and we saw no rain and heard no thunder. We didn’t stop in Tallahassee but continued on to Thomasville, GA. There was a perfect spot hugging the curb at the Wal-Mart there. We claimed it.
The next morning the blue skies and fluffy white clouds returned. We pulled out of our overnight parking spot and headed towards Savannah. It was another beautiful drive. The Savannah Elks only has two sites with hookups and we got one of them. It was another stroke of good luck. The price is right and so was the location. One thing about the east coast and RV parks we have discovered is that they are very expensive.
One of the first things we did after we were set up in our new site was to head to the center of Savannah and the Visitor’s Center. We were off to pick up some tour information. Then, we were on a mission to find Paula Deen’s restaurant. It was just under a mile from where we parked so we figured it was a great time to visit since we already had a parking spot . On top of that it was eating time. We were given a little table for two by the window. We thought it was a perfect touch.
Paula is known for succulent southern food smothered in butter. She didn’t let us down. It was delicious southern food but I was only allowed to have a couple bites of each and everything on the buffet. If I ate everything I wanted and more, I’d have to struggle to get it off again. So, considering where we were and what I ate, I did good.
We figured there was a lot to see in Savannah and it would take more time than we had then. Thus, our sightseeing adventure would be put off until the next day. By the time we got back to the RV my bag was full of information and tours. We had lots of reading to do.
I also needed to swap my cameras out. I seemed to be having lots of trouble with my older fit-in-my-purse camera. I really don’t want to buy another one but ……………. what I must do, I must do. Pictures are definitely one of my priorities.
We did catch a glimpse of Marilyn in the Old Market as we walked back to our car. We hoped it would be just a tad warmer the next day. Our fingers were crossed.
Good job staying ahead of the storms, they've looked pretty nasty down there. A Coleman Outlet sounds wonderful and dangerous at the same time :-) Southern comfort food sounds wonderful, although also dangerous........one does occasionally get tired of being "good". Hope you found some warmer blue skies!
ReplyDeleteThey were nasty storms! Southern food is wonderful for sure!
Deletewe love Savannah. So much history and good food!!
ReplyDeleteI love the history and the food too!
DeleteNice find at the Coleman outlet, good for Terry! When we teach the kids about life jackets, we let them try on the different kinds, including the inflatable. They always want to pull the cord, one day we're not going to be fast enough to stop them and...
ReplyDeleteHope the money for the replacement cartridge doesn't come out of our pockets! :cO
Those Coleman outlets are dangerous for sure. We figure if we don't fall out of the kayak and need to use a cartridge, we won't have to replace it.
DeleteHave a great time in my home state! You will love Savannah. Hope you can find some pecan crusted catfish for dinner with cheese grits...yum, yum!
ReplyDeleteI did have some pecan crusted catfish!! It was delicious.
DeleteSavannah, oh Savannah! How I love thee.
ReplyDeleteSkidaway is Passport America. It was $23.00 in 2010, On the River Walk, we loved monument to the slaves.
I don't think Skidway is still part of the PA system.
DeleteOh yeah, we sat at the table right behind/in front of you. The one in the picture.
ReplyDeleteLove area around Foley and the Gulf shores but not nice in yukky weather.
ReplyDeleteGeorgia with their comfort food and southern drawl it a beautiful place too. enjoy.
The food is amazing. Sometimes the drawl is such a drawl, you can't understand what the folks are saying. However, my dad had a southern drawl. My friends always commented on it but I was so used to it, I never noticed.
DeleteWe stay at the Foley’s Elk Lodge too. Not the most beautiful place but good price.
ReplyDeleteWe love Savannah. Did you read the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt? It is a true story set in Savannah. I pulled Paul to all the places in the book. The cemeteries are super!
I didn't read the book but I drug Terry through the Colonial Cemetery yesterday. It was great.
DeleteSavannah has been on our bucket list but every time we get close, the heat and humidity tell us to put it on the back burner. This year we have a wedding in October so plan to make our visit sometime in November. Keep us posted of all the places we don't want to miss.
ReplyDeleteA couple bites of lots of different foods is my favorite way to enjoy a buffet. I like the variety. Good thing because I never get my money's worth of quantity at those all-you-can-eat ones.
ReplyDeleteWe have been traveling with the rain since Sunday- it is getting old. Currently getting soaked in Hiawasse GA:(
ReplyDeleteHmmmm sounds like Mexico Beach all over again. LOL
