Murphy’s Law and Aloha

I think I’ve figure out how to get Murphy (from Murphy’s Law) off our back.  You have to visit him.  We did that Saturday just before our trip on Sunday.  We made a stop at Murphy’s Law Irish Pub and then posted a good review.   So,   instead of giving us  bad luck like he is so known for, he threw us a few good lucks.  Superstitious?  Certainly not  but it worked , didn’t it?

Sunday morning was departure day so on Saturday we secured the awning  put the bikes put away.  We notified the camp host we’d be gone for a few days and then went to bed.  Sometimes when you expect the alarm to wake you early, you hardly sleep at all.  That was the case but I thought I had the flights all figured out so wasn’t too stressed about it …. until we arrived at the airport and discovered the gate was packed not only with confirmed passengers but with gobs of other standbys.  Oh .. oh.  I stressed and stressed because I knew if we didn’t make this flight to Los Angeles, we probably wouldn’t be going.  Of course, Terry didn't stress.  He figured if we didn't make this flight we'd just go someplace else.  

We were already past the point of no return with the Hilton Waikiki Beach Hotel I had booked the night before so we'd be out that money!  However, that was the least of our problems.  I JUST wanted to be on that flight.

It seemed like forever until we were finally given a reprieve. Our name was called and we were given seat assignments.  Whee!  One flight down and one more to go.  The next one was the big one and the final one for the day.  We were greeted at the gate with first class tickets!  (Go Murphy!)  It’s always nice to have good seats on a long flight.  This one was 5 1/2 hours and those comfy first class seats were more than appreciated.  As you know, those first class seats also come with any drink they have on board plus a decent meal.  We were two happy people.

The good luck didn’t stop there either.  The taxi driver dropped us off at the hotel early afternoon.  Upon checking in I discovered the hotel didn’t have any rooms left in the category I had booked (cheapest).  Thus, we were offered a complimentary upgrade to a full ocean view room.  (Go Murphy!)

After dropping our few bags in the room and snapping pictures before we destroyed the neatness of that room, we headed out the door and down to the beach.  Since it was Sunday even the locals were at Waikiki.  Those who weren’t at the Farmer’s Market were taking up space on the sand, in  the water or riding the waves.  It didn’t stop us though.  We found several beach front tables, shade and even a sip or two.

Returning back to the hotel, we were beat!  After all, we were now on Hawaii time which meant we had crawled out of bed when most of these folks were probably just going to bed.  It had  been a long day.  We skipped dinner and ended up nodding off just after the sun went down.  Of course, we were up again hours before daylight. 

The next morning we found a beach front restaurant with $5.99 breakfast deals.   The breakfast was a great deal but the coffee to go with it was $3.50.  Ridiculous!  Water suited me fine.  We spent the rest of the morning wandering around.  I’m a pro at that.  By noon we were back at the hotel to meet our daughter.  That also meant we’d now be able to take advantage of her Hilton Honors status which included a free breakfast and Happy Hour in the concierge lounge.

As many times as I had been to Hawaii, I had never visited Pearl Harbor.  Terry had but I hadn’t.  Since Tammi had a car that’s where we went.  The first place we headed was the ticket booth.  However, we were out of luck.  All the tickets had been sold out for the day.  There was no more space on the boat for the visit to the actual memorial.   We may not have been able to do that but at least now I can say I’ve been to Pearl Harbor.  Been there, done that even though I didn’t get to do all of it.  (Where was Murphy?)

We’ve decided we kind of like this traveling bit and are already thinking of other places to visit.  Maybe we’ll be able to twist a few arms and get some folks to go with us. However, right ahead of us is Escapade so that comes first before anything else.  Then, we'll see.  Reservations for right after that come first.
